About
CSE vs ECE Computer Engineering
CSE and ECE Computer Engineering majors are the exact same major in terms of requirements!
All that’s different is the department you’re in, and if you choose to apply for BS/MS, the department you can get into (more on that below). If you’re in ECE and want to transfer to a CSE major, you’ll have to go through the CSE transfer process, whereas if you’re in CSE, you can switch freely.
Course Priority
Same as CSE 😎
Lower Division Coursework
- ECE 35 - take it with Curt or suffer.
Upper Division Coursework
Fun Project classes (be sure to check on WebReg for the Google Form app — project classes are usually application based)
- ECE148 Autonomous vehicles - assemble, design, and program an RC car to do some autonomous tasks! You will be a god in ECE148 — because it is an ECE/MAE class and you are usually the only person who knows CS.
- CSE176E Quadcopter - PCB Design and basic controls theory for flying a quadcopter. Larger time commitment but definitely worth it. Application determines your place in the waitlist (Swanson doesn’t let anyone enroll until after week 1) — but if you put in the work for the first week you will pretty much get in automatically (there were people in ~60th place on the waitlist who got into our class of 25, I don’t know of anyone who didn’t get in that wanted to get in).
BS/MS
You can only apply to the BS/MS program of the department you’re currently in!
CSE
https://cse.ucsd.edu/graduate/admissions/bachelorsmasters-program
- Application opens 1 year before you graduate (e.g. if you want to start in Fall 2024 then you need to apply in Spring 2023)
- This just streamlines the process to MS (i.e. you still need to finish BS first and apply for MS through the graduate portal, though you’ll be auto-accepted)
