About
What is cognition? How do people, animals, or computers ‘think,’ act, and learn? In order to understand the mind/brain, cognitive science brings together methods and discoveries from neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, and computer science.
Areas of Specialization
Lower Division Requirements
Math
- MATH 10 series or Math 20 series
- MATH 10A, MATH 10B, MATH 10C
- MATH 20A, MATH 20B, MATH 20C
- MATH 18
- Note: Machine Learning and Neural Computation specializations should take the MATH 20 series along with MATH 20E and MATH 180A as it’s a prerequisite for COGS 118A and COGS 118B which are two required specialization electives
Cognitive Science
- Introduction: COGS 1
- Design: COGS 10 or DSGN 1
- Note: DSGN 1 is a prerequisite for DSGN 100 which is one of the optional approved electives
- Methods: COGS 13, COGS 14A, COGS 14B
- Neuroscience: COGS 17
- Programming: COGS 18 or CSE 8A or CSE 11
- Note: CSE 11 is one of many prerequisites for CSE 100 which is one of the optional approved electives. In addition, CSE 100 is a prerequisite for other upper division CSE electives
- Note: Although CSE 8B is not a lower division requirement, it’s a prerequisite if you want to take other CSE courses
Upper Division Requirements
- Distributed Cognition: COGS 100
